After studying mathematics and teacher education at University (BA(Ed)), Laurie Jacques became a primary (elementary) teacher for 8 years in England. During this time she studied for a Masters (MA) in Mathematics Education from UCL, Institute of Education, London. Laurie became an Advanced Skills Teacher in 2008 and was a panel member of an advisory group to the Department of Education (sic) in England to review the teaching of mathematics across England. The report, Independent Review of Mathematics Teaching in Early Years Settings and Primary Schools, and its recommendations were welcomed by the UK Government at that time. In 2009, she left primary classroom teaching to become an independent professional development leader supporting teachers across the south of England to improve their teaching of mathematics. In 2009 Laurie was appointed Director for Primary at the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM), with a responsibility of leading the development of centrally funded professional development for primary teachers. Laurie left the NCETM in 2015 to provide independent primary mathematics professional development for in-service teachers. In 2016, inspired by the findings from the comparisons with Shanghai-style teaching and the Uk Government-funded international teacher exchange programme between England and Shanghai, Laurie began a PhD study seeking to illuminate the teaching practices that primary teachers in England need to develop to incorporate variation pedagogy (变异教学) in their normal practice. Variation is an approach known to be commonly used in Asian cultures but rarely used in England. Laurie is visiting Shanghai in 2019 to enrich her knowledge of mathematics teaching practices in Shanghai and how teachers develop their professional skills.

In 2014 a revised National Curriculum for Mathematics was introduced into primary schools in England. In the 2013 OECD PISA ranking the UK was placed 50 out of 148 countries in mathematics achievement. This sparked interest in learning from the countries achieving highest in the rankings. Government officials visited Shanghai in 2014 and from this point, interest in Shanghai teaching practices has informed a systematic attempt by the UK government to reform the teaching and learning of mathematics in primary and secondary schools in England. In this seminar, Laurie will share what measures have been used to facilitate the reform since 2014. By considering the research on curricula and pedagogical reform in mathematics, Laurie asks if there is still more to learn about how the success of Shanghai students in international comparisons has been accomplished and whether England might ever become as successful?
